When in doubt, believe!

“Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.”- Buddha

Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, I think we can all appreciate the wisdom in the statement above.
No matter what we have done or haven’t done in our lives up until now, we can start today being who we want to be.
Even if we are happy with who we are and what we’ve done, we all probably have some dreams and goals that we haven’t started or fulfilled yet.
What have you always wanted to do, try, learn  or be?
Would the world be any different if you weren’t born? Do you wake up in the morning feeling like you have an important role to play in the grand scheme of things?
Many of us grow up in a world where life is dispensable, where our individual contributions go unrecognized, where there is no real sense that life  –  ours or anyone’s  – is significant or meaningful.
At the root of this restlessness and discontent is a conviction that we don’t matter. A belief that if we were to show up someplace or not, or make some kind of contribution or not, it would not fundamentally affect the world or the people that live in it.
Think about that for a minute. If we don’t feel like we make a difference in the world, how excited can we be about the things we do and the choices we make? When we wake up in the morning and feel like what we do that day doesn’t matter anyway, how committed or passionate can we be?
I was listening to the radio this weekend and these words turned my day around.
It doesn’t matter what we are born without, what matters is what we are born with. Just being born is God’s way of saying we matter.
This means we are absolutely necessary. We are indispensable to God’s vision of the world, chosen to fulfill a mission in this world that only we can accomplish. Like musical notes in a grand Divine composition, each of us has a unique musical note to play.
The mere fact that we were born, that we exist, regardless of our mood, our performance level, our looks that day – the mere fact that we are here is a vote of confidence from God that we are indispensable, absolutely necessary, irreplaceable. No one can replace us. We truly matter.
Do you know how that made me feel? We have permission to matter, and we are even commanded to matter.
The world would be different if we were not here to fulfill a calling. We have been allotted a certain section of this globe, with certain talents; people we will meet; experiences we will have; places we will go; objects we will obtain – all are allocated to us in order for us to transform them, to leave them differently from how we found them.
When we know that our contribution is crucial, it infuses us to do all that we do with a compelling sense of urgency.
We matter. Our lives and what we do with them matter. When in doubt, believe that!
