Collaborative effort delivers 5,865 meals and counting to hungry students

Under the direction of School Superintendent Mark Earnest, school nutrition program director Ivey McLendon and David Williams of the Seminole County Ministerial Association, 5,865 free Grab and Go meals were distributed to students in the effort’s first five days of distribution at eleven locations throughout the county. The feed the students campaign began on Wednesday, March 18.

The first four days of distribution  the Grab and Go bags consisted of a sandwich, chips, vegetable, milk, juice, fresh fruit, and a breakfast item. On Tuesday, March 24, the bags consisted of a five-day supply of breakfast and lunch meals that included  three cold sandwiches, a jar of peanut butter donated by Birdsong Peanut, fresh bread slices, jelly,  fresh vegetables, chips, breakfast items, fresh fruit, milk, and juice.

“We packaged these items in bags donated from the Piggly Wiggly and this distribution effort would not have been possible  without the help of our wonderful volunteers and representatives of local churches in the community,” commented McLendon.

Grab and Go bags containing  a four-day supply of food will be distributed on Tuesday, March 31st. After that date no distribution is planned for the week of April 5-11, the scheduled Spring Break week for the school system.

McLendon said plans for continued food distribution after Spring Break week are in development.

The eleven distribution sites of the meals, available for all school students ages zero to 18, remain the same.
