New column to focus on literacy rates and more

In an effort to raise awareness of the importance and power of literacy and to keep the community informed with the goals and mission of Seminole County Family Connection, beginning next week the Donalsonville News will offer bi-weekly space to Family Connection Coordinator Billie McLendon to do just that.

“Family Connection strives to be a piece of a much bigger puzzle for helping strengthen Seminole County. We can’t do it alone; we are one piece but when all the pieces work together, we become a wonderful, complete picture,” commented McLendon.

Seminole County Family Connection is a county collaborative that works together to improve the quality of life for Seminole County’s children and families. The collaborative’s goal is to help improve reading skills for Seminole County’s children so that all students are able to read at or above third grade level by the third grade. All of the collaborative’s events, programs, and fundraisers keep this goal as the center of its efforts.

Community Collaboration is key to the success of Family Connection. In addition to McLendon, Family Connection is operated by a board that consists of Boone Kennedy, Wes Baldwin, Erin Lenz, Shelia Williams, Sheryl Rodgers, Kathy Reese, Martha Fowler, and Justin Gravlee.

McLendon is a Donalsonville native and has been Family Connection Coordinator for two years. She earned her BS in Public Service from Middle Georgia State University.

She is married to Mac McLendon and they have two daughters, Rylee and Charlee June with Maylee on the way.
