The University of Georgia Peanut Team honored Georgia’s top peanut producers at the annual Georgia Peanut Achievement awards ceremony held recently on Jekyll Island.

Seminole County’s 4 Miller Farms, represented by Dee and Eddie Miller, Jr.,  was  the 2022 Georgia Peanut Achievement Club State Winners in the 700 plus acres category.

4 Miller Farms produced the highest yield — 6,383 pounds of peanuts per acre — earning them  first place in the 700+ acre category for District 2. Miller attributes part of his success to UGA’s plant breeding program, which is led by members of the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

“We’ve climbed in yields in these categories with the growers that we have. I mean they’ve continued to stay well above 6,000-pound averages across the board,” said a UGA cooperative extension peanut agronomist. “This is taking into consideration their entire farm, whether it’s dryland or irrigated. Their entire farm is counted. It’s just phenomenal.”

Georgia is the No. 1 producer of peanuts in the United States. Georgia farmers provide more than 45 percent of the country’s peanut crop every year.

“These are the growers we call ‘sustainable.’ They do an excellent job,” a UGS spokesperson commented said. “When you have growers who consistently produce more than 6,000 pounds per acre, that’s remarkable. That’s why they are regarded as the best.”
