Qualifying opens Monday, August 21 for Donalsonville and Iron City’s municipal posts

  The time to qualify for the November 7, 2023 City of Donalsonville and Town of Iron City’s municipal elections, and pay the stated qualifying fees, begins Monday, August 21 at 8:30 a.m., and continues through Friday, August 25 until 4:30 p.m.  

In the Town of Iron City the Office of Mayor currently held by Ronnie Ingram, along with the following two council posts are up for re-election; Post 1 is currently represented by Zack Conoly, and Post 3 is currently represented by John Gray. The qualifying fee for the office of Mayor is $35, and $25 for each council post.

The City of Donalsonville has two council posts up for re-lection – District One, Post 2, currently represented by Travis Brooks and, District Two, Post 5, currently represented by Mitchell Blanks. Each post has a $108 qualifying fee.

Potential qualifying candidates for posts in the City of Donalsonville should be aware of district boundary changes to District One and Two since the last election. Pictured on page one, and detailed in narrative at the end of this article, the changes in the boundaries of these districts were made in the effort to equalize population and voter numbers in each. That equalization process was performed by the Donalsonville City Council using population numbers from the 2020 Census count.

Candidates shall file their notices of candidacy and pay their qualifying fees to the Probate Judge/Elections Superintendent, Michael Jon Rogerson, in the Seminole County Courthouse, 200 S. Knox Ave., Donalsonville, Georgia.  For more information regarding the election process, contact the Board of Registrars or the Probate Judge at 229-524-5256.

The city of Donalsonville is divided into two voting districts, District I and District II, with three councilmembers being elected from District I and three councilmembers being elected from District II. District I shall contain Council Posts 1, 2, and 3; and District II shall contain Council Posts 4, 5, and 6. The Mayor shall run at large, representing both districts.

The boundaries of District I shall be as follows:

Beginning at a point where the centerline of Georgia Highway 91 intersects the northern city limits of the City of Donalsonville, Georgia; run thence south along the centerline of said Highway 91 to the intersection of East Carr Street; run thence east along the centerline of East Carr Street to the intersection with North Henderson Avenue; run thence south along the centerline of North Henderson Avenue until North Henderson intersects with Baldwin Street; run thence east along the centerline of Baldwin Street until it intersects with North Dowling Avenue; run thence south along the centerline of North Dowling to the point where it intersects with the centerline of East Third Street,
a/k/a U.S. Highway 84; proceed thence in a southeasterly direction to a point where East Third Street intersects South Stem Street; run thence south along the centerline of South Stem until it intersects with East Fifth Street; run thence east along the centerline of East Fifth Street to the point where it intersects the centerline of South Friendship Avenue; run thence along the centerline of South Friendship to the intersection with East Seventh Street; turn thence west and run along the centerline of East Seventh Street to the centerline of the aforementioned Georgia Highway 91; proceed thence in a southerly direction along the centerline of Georgia Highway 91 to a point on the southern city limit line of the City of Donalsonville, Georgia; run thence west along the southern city limits to the southwest corner of the City of Donalsonville, Georgia; turn north and run along the western city limit line to the point which is the northwest corner of the City of Donalsonville, Georgia; from this point run east along the northern city limit line to the centerline of Georgia Highway 91, which is the point of beginning.

The boundaries of District II shall be as follows:

Beginning at a point where the centerline of Georgia Highway 91 intersects the northern city limits of the City of Donalsonville, Georgia; run thence south along the centerline of the centerline of said Highway 91 to the intersection of East Carr Street; run thence east along the centerline of East Carr Street to the intersection with North Henderson Avenue; run thence south along the centerline of North Henderson Avenue until North Henderson intersects with Baldwin Street; run thence east along the centerline of Baldwin Street until it intersects with North Dowling Avenue; run thence south along the centerline of North Dowling to the point where it intersects with the centerline of East Third Street, a/k/a U.S. Highway 84; proceed thence in a southeasterly direction to a point where East Third Street intersects South Stem Street; run thence south along the centerline of South Stem until it intersects with East Fifth Street; run thence east along the centerline of East Fifth Street to the point where it intersects the centerline of South Friendship Avenue; run thence along the centerline of South Friendship to the intersection with East Seventh Street; turn thence west and run along the centerline of East Seventh Street to the centerline of the aforementioned Georgia Highway 91; proceed thence in a southerly direction along the centerline of Georgia Highway 91 to a point on the southern city limit line of the City of Donalsonville, Georgia; run thence east along the southern city limit line to the southeast corner of the City of Donalsonville, Georgia; turn north and run along the eastern city limit line to the point which is the northeast corner of the City of Donalsonville, Georgia; from this point run west along the northern city limit line to the centerline of Georgia Highway 91, which is the point of beginning.

Also, included in District II is a recently annexed industrial park to the east of the original eastern city limit line and north of U.S. Highway 84. No persons reside upon this annexed property.
