Three day event in the works for Centennial celebration

Community leaders met last Thursday evening to renew discussions and planning of a Seminole County Centennial celebration.

Originally scheduled to be held in 2020, and then in 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic and its health and safety protocols completely derailed previous plans of staging Seminole County’s county-wide celebration to highlight and celebrate the county’s progress in its first 100 years.

A three-day event is currently in the planning stages to be held tentatively the last weekend of April or the first weekend of May.  It is the hopes of the planning committee that this Spring celebration will then become an annual event that will in future years include a fishing tournament, and a local citizens’ food, arts and craft fair.

Ideas discussed for the centennial celebration included a brown bag lunch in downtown Donalsonville on Friday, along with period-type entertainment at various times and location. Saturday’s events could include an interactive history walk featuring historical monologues and entertainment downtown leading attendees west on Second Street to a period costume dinner and musical event under tents on the Courthouse lawn, A fireworks extravaganza would conclude the evening.

On Sunday tentative plans call for a community wide Gospel sing, dinner on the grounds, and a community wide prayer and blessing for prosperity over the next 100 years.

Interactive 100-year history projects, displays and presentations designed and created by elementary, middle and high school students were discussed, along with ideas of the staging of a historical photograph and fine art show and a ceremony to  dedicate and seal a new 100-year time capsule.

A second planning meeting will be held Thursday, February 3rd at 6 p.m. in the Beall Center located at 222 Cherry Street in downtown Donalsonville. If you have ideas for the event and would like to have them discussed you must make the effort to attend a planning meeting.

All interested in joining the planning team and helping to bring the dream of the event into a reality are welcome to attend.
