New SCMHS cell phone and electronic devices policy

In accordance with Georgia’s Distraction-Free Education Act (House Bill 340), SCMHS has implemented new guidelines regarding personal electronic devices.

Students in grades six through twelve are not permitted to use personal electronic devices — including phones, tablets, headphones, and smartwatches — from the first bell to the last bell each school day.

Devices must be turned off or silenced and stored securely in lockers, bookbags, or purses.

This policy applies to all parts of the day unless a staff member authorizes use.

Parents needing to reach their child during school hours should contact the front office directly.

Consequences for violations include:

First Offense: Warning and parent contact

Second Offense: After-school detention, possible parent pick-up

Third through Fifth Offense: One to five days in-School Suspension (ISS)

Sixth Offense: Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) and Behavior Intervention Plan

Serious misuse (cyberbullying, threats, etc.) will result in immediate law enforcement referral.

Attendance policy highlights

Regular attendance is essential for student success. Key points include:

One to Two Unexcused Absences: Teacher and principal designee contact parents.

Three Unexcused Absences: First attendance letter sent to parents.

Five Unexcused Absences: Certified letter; home visit by school social worker.

Six to Eight Unexcused Absences: Possible home visit from Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) and legal action.

SCMHS is committed to working with families to improve attendance and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
