DDDA begins Talk It Up Tuesday series; This week spotlights the Donalsonville News

In a world that often leans toward competition, Donalsonville is choosing a different path — one of collaboration, celebration, and community spirit. That’s the heart behind the Donalsonville Downtown Development Authority’s new Talk It Up Tuesday initiative, a weekly business spotlight designed to uplift and highlight the people and places shaping our small-town story.

DDDA Director Tori Gravlee commented, “Last week, we shared our vision: to create a culture shift — one that lifts one another up, encourages partnerships across sectors, and reminds us that we are stronger when we cheer each other on. As parents, educators, neighbors, and leaders, we have a responsibility to set the tone for the next generation. Our children are watching, and if we want to call them up to something greater, we must model kindness, humility, and purpose-driven leadership.

This week, we proudly shine our spotlight on one of the most iconic and enduring businesses in our community: the Donalsonville News.”

Over a century of

community storytelling

Since 1916, the Donalsonville News has served as the steadfast voice of Seminole County, marking over 108 years as the oldest continuously operating business in Donalsonville. Through wars, milestones, and cultural shifts, the paper has remained a constant — documenting our past, engaging with the present, and shaping the story of our future.

Founded by Glover B. Garwood, the paper’s legacy has been built by a succession of devoted leaders: Ellison Dunn, Raymond Wheeler, E.C. “Billy” Smith Jr., Julian Webb, Waldo “Bo” McLeod, and Dan Ponder — each adding their own chapter to its history of excellence.

Today, the Donalsonville News continues its mission under the ownership and leadership of David C. Maxwell, who became sole owner and publisher on January 1, 2024. Maxwell, who has dedicated more than a decade to the paper’s editorial leadership, has guided it into a new era of recognition and impact.

Under his direction, the paper has earned more than 170 Georgia Press Association awards — from writing and design to general excellence. Most recently, Maxwell was installed as Vice President of the Georgia Press Association’s Board of Directors during its 138th convention, marking a new milestone for both his career and our hometown paper.

“Teamwork makes the dream work,” Maxwell says — and it’s clear that his commitment to collaboration and community is part of what keeps the Donalsonville News thriving.

Gravllee added, “As we continue this new Talk It Up Tuesday series, we invite you to not only celebrate these spotlights but to reflect on the deeper story they tell — one of unity, perseverance, and shared purpose.

Let’s keep lifting each other up, one story at a time.”
